Jackie achieved her goals despite many obstacles. Her mother,
often heavily medicated, suffers from bi-polar disorder. Jackie’s maternal
grandparents helped with money, groceries and transportation, but not as often as
needed. Due to the lack of stability within the household, Jackie spent a
great deal of time playing the role of an adult. She missed a lot of school and
had trouble making friends. Carrying this overwhelming responsibility, Jackie
began running away and was declared incorrigible.
Jackie completed several residential treatment programs, first as a neglected ward
and then as a juvenile delinquent. Her behavioral issues continued to escalate
until she decided to deal with her major stressor - family issues. After working
through treatment, Jackie was placed in a setting that provided the opportunity
for positive progress.
Jackie wanted to live independently of her mother and set that as a goal upon entering
the JJDRA Program. Unfortunately, Jackie was returned home and once again
spiraled downhill. The intervention of JJDRA, family counseling and individual
therapy for both Jackie and her mother helped to make positive progress. As
each participated in the treatment modules, the communications improved and Jackie
was able to focus on her personal priorities and education. With financial
assistance from the JJDRA program, Jackie enrolled in Oakland Community College.
Jackie successfully completed the JJDRA Program, continues to reside in the home
of her mother and is doing well.
